John Russell, IV Duke of Bedford


 

John Russell, 4th Duke and 8th Earl of Bedford (1710-1771)

 
4th son of Wriothesley Russell, 2nd Duke. He succeeded his elder brother in 1732. He m.(1) 1731 Diana (d.1735) dau of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland; (2) 1737 Lady Gertrude Leveson-Gower (d.1794) dau of John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower.
App. Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland (1756) and Minister Plenipotentiary to France (1762) where he signed at Fontainebleau the preliminaries of peace between France and Spain.
